It is related to many other corpora of English that we have created (and which were formerly known as the "BYU Corpora", and they offer unparalleled insight into variation in English. For example, the British National Corpus (BNC) is a multi-purpose corpus consisting of approximately 100 million words. One of the main aims of the construction of the corpus was to create a material that would reflect contemporary British English in its various social and generic uses (Kennedy 1998; Meyer 2002).
